A man identified as Cole Tomas Allen is under investigation for attempting to disrupt a high-level bipartisan gathering that brought together members of the two major U.S. political parties and journalists. The event was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic engagement in the United States.
The gathering was attended by Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, as well as several senators from both the Democratic and Republican parties, alongside political reporters.
The event took place on the evening of Saturday, April 25, 2026, at the Washington Hilton, located about a 10-minute walk from the White House.
Authorities say the threat level was extremely high. Allen, a 31-year-old from California, had earlier rented a VIP room at the hotel and had been granted access to the hall where senior officials were gathered.

According to reports, Allen—who previously worked as a teacher—entered the hotel without undergoing thorough screening, as he was already a registered guest. However, at the final security checkpoint, roughly 20 meters from the main hall, the situation escalated.
He reportedly reached for one of three firearms in his possession and opened fire, engaging security personnel. One officer was injured but survived, thanks to wearing a bulletproof vest.
Allen attempted to push forward toward President Trump, who was only a short distance away. Security forces responded immediately, shooting and incapacitating him before he could reach his target.
President Trump and other top officials were swiftly evacuated from the hall, while other attendees took cover under tables and chairs until authorities confirmed that the suspect had been subdued.
Later, President Trump returned to address the audience, praising security personnel for their swift and heroic response. He also shared images of the suspect and footage showing how the incident unfolded.

Allen was later presented before President Trump while lying face down, restrained with his hands tied behind his back. He is currently receiving treatment at a hospital near the Washington Hilton and is expected to appear in court on Monday, April 27, 2026.
The Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Kash Patel, stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the suspect’s motives and any potential accomplices. He urged the public to share any relevant information.
This is not the first time Trump has narrowly escaped death. During the 2024 presidential campaign, a man identified as Thomas Crooks fired eight shots at him during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, with one bullet grazing his ear.
