Hydropower on Sebeya River Showcased to Kigali Energy Delegates

On Thursday, September 11, 2025, participants of the 5th Kigali Renewable Energy for Sustainable Growth (RE4SG) Conference toured Rubavu District to see firsthand how Rwanda is harnessing natural resources to boost electricity production.

The delegation, hosted by Energy Private Developers (EPD), began their field visit at Keya Hydropower Plant, a facility built on the Sebeya River by ENERGICOTEL, before boarding to Methane Gas Power Plant built in deep waters of Lake Kivu.

The Sebeya—often called the “stubborn river” for its frequent flooding—has long been a source of hardship for nearby communities. Today, however, it also represents progress: three hydropower plants built along the river now produce a combined 4.8 megawatts of electricity, contributing to Rwanda’s growing renewable energy mix.

Beyond energy generation, the dams and catchments on the Sebeya are helping protect the environment. They slow down the river’s destructive flow and capture waste that would otherwise pollute Lake Kivu.

During the visit, Honoré Mugiraneza, Head of Operations and Maintenance at Keya, explained the process: water from the dam is funneled through high-pressure pipes, strikes the turbines, and instantly produces electricity.

The field tour formed part of the RE4SG 2025 agenda, designed to showcase Rwanda’s investments in sustainable power and their role in driving green growth across the region.
