MTN Rwanda posts Rwf 6.3 billion profit in first half of 2025

Telecommunications company MTN Rwandacell Plc recorded a net profit of Rwf 6.3 billion in the first six months of 2025, after tax. This marks a major turnaround from the losses the company reported during the same period in 2024.

Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) reached Rwf 56.1 billion, reflecting the company’s improved revenue generation before accounting for currency depreciation and asset amortization.

The EBITDA margin also rose by 9.1 percentage points to 40.4%, indicating that beyond boosting profits, MTN Rwandacell Plc has significantly improved operational efficiency and cost management.

Overall, the number of MTN voice service subscribers grew by 3.5% year-on-year to 7.8 million, while Mobile Money users increased by 9.1% to 6.56 million.

Merchants using MoMo rose sharply by 29.7% to 572,000, with the total value of transactions reaching Rwf 21.9 trillion across 1.4 billion transaction counts.

Internet users also grew by 13.1% to 2.4 million, boosted by the company’s rollout of 5G services. Revenue from internet services rose by 10.1% to Rwf 23.3 billion.

Mobile Money services generated Rwf 68.6 billion, a 29.1% increase, driven largely by the growing use of digital payment solutions such as the MoMo virtual card and the Kwance platform.

MTN staff also contributed to community initiatives, including donating smartphones to 100 community health workers, providing solar kits to 100 families, and training over 300 people in digital literacy.

MTN Rwandacell Plc Chief Finance Officer Dunstan Ayodele Stober said, “We are pleased with our profit results and are confident of a strong performance in the second half of 2025.”

Chief Executive Officer Ali Monzer added, “Our goal is clear—to expand infrastructure investment, execute our strategy effectively, and put our customers at the heart of everything we do.”
