The Chancellery for Heroes, National Orders and Decorations of Honour (CHENO) says true patriotism is not limited to words or emotions, but is demonstrated through tangible actions that promote the well-being and progress of all citizens—without self-interest, citing American philanthropist Howard G. Buffett as a shining example of that spirit.
According to Rwaka Nicolas, CHENO’s Director of Research, patriotism means striving for the development of one’s country in every aspect—governance, the economy, and social welfare—while protecting its people, land, and natural resources.
Speaking to KIGALIINFO.COM during Rwanda’s Patriotism Day celebrations in early October 2025, Rwaka emphasized that being patriotic is about working for the common good, ensuring that every citizen benefits from national growth.
“A patriot is someone who works for the well-being of all citizens, protects the nation’s resources, and contributes to sustainable development without thinking of personal gain,” Rwaka said.
To illustrate this spirit, Rwaka mentioned Howard G. Buffett, the American philanthropist who founded the Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture (RICA). He said Buffett’s work in promoting modern, environmentally sustainable farming aligns with Rwanda’s national vision of self-reliance and inclusive development.

RICA, located in Gashora and Rweru sectors of Bugesera District, trains students in climate-smart agriculture and sustainable livestock management. Its programs combine academic learning with hands-on practice, using solar-powered irrigation systems and farming methods that prevent soil erosion.
In September, the institute graduated 83 students, making a total number of 239 Rwandans who have completed its programs since the university opened in 2019.
“Mr. Buffett loves our country,” Rwaka said. “None of those students he supports are his relatives, yet his contribution uplifts communities, promotes investment, and gives Rwanda a positive image globally. That is why he was honored with the Umudari w’Igihango (Medal of Friendship)—in recognition of his lasting impact.”
He added that such examples should inspire Rwandans to deepen their commitment to national development through integrity, hard work, and service to others.
Buffett, a businessman, photographer, conservationist, and humanitarian, established RICA to equip African farmers—especially smallholders—with the knowledge and tools to make agriculture both profitable and sustainable.

Through initiatives like RICA, Rwaka said, Rwanda continues to cultivate a new generation of patriotic citizens who contribute to their country’s progress through innovation, environmental protection, and a spirit of national pride.
