RDF out of uniform but still in service

Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) soldiers recently retired from active duty say that while they may have removed the uniform, their sense of duty to the nation remains firmly intact.

Among them is Major General (Rtd) Wilson Gumisiriza, who spoke on behalf of his fellow retirees during the 13th annual RDF retirement ceremony held on Monday evening, July 28, 2025. The event took place at the RDF Headquarters in Kimihurura and simultaneously across various RDF division bases throughout the country.

Maj Gen (Rtd) Gumisiriza said he and his colleagues are proud of how far the RDF has come and the role they played in elevating it to one of the most respected defense forces in the world. More importantly, he emphasized that their commitment to Rwanda is not tied to the uniform they once wore.

“Even though we are stepping back from our daily responsibilities, we will continue to serve the country in one way or another,” said Gumisiriza. “We may have taken off the uniform, but we have not taken off our responsibilities to the nation.”

He noted that although they are entering a new phase in life, they remain ready to contribute to national development in diverse ways.

In recognition of their service, each of the retirees was awarded a certificate of appreciation, acknowledging their dedication and lasting contribution to the RDF and Rwanda at large.

Minister of Defence, Juvénal Marizamunda, speaking on behalf of the Commander-in-Chief, President Paul Kagame, praised the retirees for their bravery and selfless service—especially during times when Rwanda needed them the most.

Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Mubarakh Muganga, also paid tribute to the retirees for their unwavering dedication and tangible impact throughout their years of military service.

The group of retirees included generals, senior officers, and junior officers, marking a significant generational transition within Rwanda’s armed forces.
